Education at SAMFA

Art is for everyone.

The Education Studio brings art education to life for learners of all ages in San Angelo and the Concho Valley. Through studio programs, school partnerships, and STEAM-centered activities, we create opportunities for visitors of all ages to explore, imagine, think critically, and create.

Programs & Opportunities

  • Family Day

    Sponsored by Sterling-Turner Foundation
    & City National Bank

Every 3rd Saturday of the month, the museum comes alive with hands-on activities, performances, and gallery experiences designed for families.

Family Days include STEAM-based art projects inspired by SAMFA’s collections and exhibitions, free books for children (while supplies last), and free clay workshops for kids. Family Day is a welcoming, interactive way to explore art and cultures together.

  • Art Thursdays

    Sponsored by Sterling-Turner Foundation
    & City National Bank

Every Thursday on school days, 4–7 PM, the Education Studio opens for drop-in artmaking for all ages. Art Thursdays feature two indoor art projects, one outdoor activity in the breezeway or patio, and creative projects inspired by current exhibitions and seasonal themes

Admission is free and all materials are provided. Come and go as you please!

  • STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Mathematics) Sculpting

Free Clay Classes for Kids - Sponsored by the Mary Ellen Kent Bunyard Foundation

Kids aged 7–17 are invited to join a clay instructor for a fun, hands-on clay workshop designed just for kids and teens.

Kids will learn basic hand-building techniques while exploring their creativity.

  • Outreach & Field Trips

SAMFA partners with schools throughout the Concho Valley to make art accessible both in and out of the classroom. Our outreach includes:

    - Free art kits for schools, designed for at-home STEAM projects

    - Scheduled field trips with hands-on activities

These programs extend the museum’s resources into the community and support student learning across subjects.

  • Camps & Workshops

The Education Studio offers special workshops that connect students with practicing artists. These programs include the The En Plein Air Texas Student Workshop, where advanced high school art students learn directly from professional plein air painters during the annual EPAT events.

SAMFA also hosts an art camp each summer for kids aged 7–12.
