Museum Policies & Etiquette

We look forward to welcoming you to SAMFA! For the safety of our artworks, please review our guidelines below before you visit. Still have questions? Visit our contact page.

San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts reserves the right to refuse or revoke the admission of any visitor whose conduct violates these guidelines.

Visitor Guidelines

To help ensure a safe, enjoyable experience for everyone, we ask visitors to observe the following general policies while visiting SAMFA. Click through each policy to see an explanation!

  • Have you ever noticed the letters wearing off the keys on a keyboard, or smudges around a light switch?

Touching art can cause damage that we sometimes can’t see, and lead to severe deterioration over time. Abiding by our policies will ensure that the art can be enjoyed by many generations to come!

    • Please do not touch the art, frames, or pedestals.

    • Please view the art at a safe distance—stand at least two feet away, to prevent accidental touches.

    • Please be aware of where you are walking. Something fragile might be in your path (or right behind you)!

  • Food and drinks (including gum and bottled water), are not permitted in the museum. Even if you are careful, spills can happen! You can leave food and drinks in your vehicle, or at the admissions desk. A medical exemption for some food items or bottled water may be allowed. Please speak with admissions staff for more information.

  • Please smoke or vape outside at least 25 feet away from the museum building. Smoking, vaping, and use of smokeless tobacco products are not allowed in the museum or on the rooftop terrace.

  • These items could hit, brush, or knock over a work of art in the museum!

Large bags, backpacks, umbrellas, briefcases, video cameras, flashes, and tripods are prohibited in the museum. These items may be left with the admissions staff.

  • We need parents’ help to make sure kids behave appropriately, and we also want your kids to stay safe!

Strollers are welcome, but they must be pushed by the child’s parent or guardian, and pushed forward-facing, rather than pulled. Why? Someone not paying attention to the speed and direction of a stroller could collide with art or people!

  • Service animals are welcome, but a service animal must stay with its handler at all times. Pets are prohibited.

We welcome visitors of all abilities to the museum. A service animal is specially trained to perform a specific task for its handler. We all love animals here, but the museum is not an appropriate place for a pet. Please leave your pets at home!

  • The SAMFA Gallery Monitors are here to make sure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. The Gallery Monitors are required to be in attendance in every occupied gallery, to ensure that our policies are followed, and in case anyone needs assistance.

We want you to remember your time here! It’s usually fine to take photos for only your personal use or educational use. If photography is NOT allowed for a particular artwork or exhibit, we will post a notice.

Please, no flash photography. The light from a photo flash can cause unseen damage to artworks, so please turn off the flash! If you have ever looked at the back of a pair of curtains that have hung in the same window for a long time, you will see the damage that light can do.

Commercial photography, filming, photoshoots, or promotional media projects require prior approval and may be subject to a facility rental fee. Please contact events@samfa.org or marketing@samfa.org for further inquires on this.

Members of the media wishing to photograph or film inside the museum for news or media coverage should contact the Director of Marketing at marketing@samfa.org.
