Permanent Collection

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts has endeavored to create a permanent collection of artworks to be used for study, research and exhibition. The collection was established for the purpose of providing the community with a greater understanding of aesthetic and artistic traditions and human achievement in the visual arts.

Around 1500 objects currently comprise the Permanent Collection. Among the Permanent Collection’s areas of concentration, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts has established a distinguished collection of contemporary American ceramics, many purchased from the San Angelo North American Ceramic Competitions held at the museum. The collection also includes historical ceramics and ceramics from all over the world. Other focus areas of the collection include early and contemporary Texas art, and Spanish colonial and 19th century Latin American art, and American manufactured glass.

The museum, as a matter of policy and as a central goal, is committed to the broadest possible exposure of and access to the collections. A unique feature of SAMFA is its visible storage gallery for selections from the collection, which is always accessible to visitors. We also have lent extensively from our collection to other museums without a fee, and are currently working to have the entire collections catalog eventually available online.

Ceramics Collection

Contemporary American Ceramics has long been the main focus area of SAMFA's Permanent Collection. In recent years, however, the collection has expanded to include ceramics from Europe, Mexico, Canada, and Asia--thanks to several generous donations from noted collectors. Our collection now exceeds 750 ceramic pieces. Below are some works representing just a small portion of the collection.
