James
Gill Exhibit Opening October 6, 2005;
continues through Jan. 15th, 2006.
James Gill was born
in San Angelo TX in 1934 and graduated from San Angelo high school in 1953.
By 1967, his mixed media paintings and images dealing with popular cultural
figures and social issues had gained wide recognition and were collected
by many of the leading museums in America, including the Museum of Modern
Art in
New York, the Chicago Art Institute and the National Gallery. Today Mr.
Gill is working more vigorously than ever and has major gallery representation.
The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts will dedicate all of its gallery space
to a retrospective of James Gill's work and is producing a full color catalog
to accompany the exhibit. The guest curator for the exhibit is Jim Edwards,
curator of the Salt Lake Art Center in Salt Lake City Utah. The exhibition
is sponsored by The National Endowment for the Arts, the San Angelo Cultural
Affairs Council, Pat and Betty McCarley, and Akzenta AG in Germany.
