San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts

Early Texas Art in the Concho Valley

November 20- January 18, 2009

To accompany the exhibit Texas in My Soul, the Museum has looked into its own collection and found a number of works of early Texas art which, along with a generous loan from the San Angelo Art Club will comprise the exhibit, Early Texas Art in the Concho Valley. The San Angelo Art Club was organized in 1928 by a small group of local artists. The second oldest continuous art organization in the state of Texas, the Art Club, over the past 80 years, has had many artist members and has acquired a significant collection of art of its own. Today the San Angelo Art Club is housed in Kendall Gallery at 119 West 1st Street for the purpose of promoting fine art and art education in the San Angelo area. Land for the gallery was donated to the Art Club by Riley Kendall in 1946 in memory of his wife, Helen King Kendall, and the initial gallery was built in 1949. Further additions to the gallery were made in the 1950s as well as a storage facility in 1969.
