Defining Moments: An Exhibition of Works by Bryan Collier

Bryan Collier has developed his own unique style of painting that incorporates watercolor and collage which he utilizes to illustrate children's books. "With the books I've been doing, I have this amazing opportunity to bring my art and the process of making artwork and books into the classroom." This exhibit was organized by the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature and was made possible by a grant from the San Angelo Area Foundation.

Bryan Collier grew up in Pocomoke, Maryland, on the lower Eastern Shore of the state, the youngest of six children. Collier's interest in art began early in his childhood, as he was inspired by the works of Ezra Jack Keats and Crockett Johnson. He received a bachelor's degree in fine art from the Pratt Institute in New York. Before he began writing books he served as director of the Harlem Horizon Art Studio, a studio he helped create that's located within the Harlem Hospital that helps many young children to emotionally overcome serious injuries by using painting as a focus for their energies and frustrations. Today Bryan spends his time working on book illustrations, creating his own studio pieces and going into classrooms to talk with teachers, librarians and students about books and art.
