Education
started 2007 with a bang. SAMFA and the San Angelo Symphony partnered to
bring the Painted Violin program to the elementary and private schools
of San Angelo. This outreach program brought art and music together for
the kids of the Concho Valley.
San Angelo Symphony's Principal
Violist, Dorothy Douthit plays the violin as kids at Fort Concho make their
own "painted violins."
SAMFA, the San Angelo Civic Ballet, San Angelo Nature Center, Fort Concho,
and the Symphony joined forces for a Spring Break adventure on t
he
theme of The American Experience. The week of March 12-14 brought
kids in to experience the delights of America from Native American dance,
life in the American West, American music, art, and animals. It was a tour
of all things that make up the USA. Spring
Breakers create their own graffiti hats after the work of Basquiat.
The museum teamed with the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Angelo to bring an
afternoon art outreach
program
to kids in the community. Melody Baez, our intern from ASU, led the kids
in art adventures ranging from clay to junk sculpture. MHMR continued
to use the museum's studio space to host its twice weekly art classes. Both
programs are away for the summer but will return in the fall.

Along with these partnering programs, SAMFA continued its regula
r
educational offerings. "Art Thursday" was a great success, bringing
children and adults to the Museum for hands-on art fun. "Art Thursdays"
is on hiatus for the summer but will return on September 6. Save
the date! SAISD
Superintendent, Dr. Carol Ann Bonds enjoys Art Thursdays with her granddaughter.
Field trips to SAMFA were taken by many school age children in and
around San Angelo. Elementary through high school students explored the
world of clay, West Texas
photography,
the art and music connection, and the sculpture of Jesus Moroles. Kids weren't
the only ones enjoying the tour experience. Adults were in on the fun, too.

Fun
was had by all during "Summer for Kids" 2007. The summer fun kicked
off with our "Family Day," sponsored by Ethicon, on June
2. Kids and adults enjoyed free hands-on art activities from throwing clay
on the wheel to bottle cap art. Mark your calendar for SAMFA's fall
"Family Day" on October 20, 2007. Throwing

This year's Summer For Kids theme was Art Adventures. Our adventurous
artists, ages 3-12, explored printmaking, clay, character creations, fun
with paper, Japanese manga, mask making, and the magic of Ancient Egypt.
This year's program was a great success, serving approximately 825 kids
from in and around the Concho Valley. SAMFA would also like to extend thanks
to our SFK teachers, Jean Teague, Jo Ann Tambasco, Jill Baron, Joy Noguess,
and Randy Hall. Thanks for your help!

SFK
wasn't the only program at SAMFA this summer. ASU Kids Kollege used the
studio to host their summer art program for kids. ASU campers learned the
principles of watercolor. ASU also brought adults into the Education Studio
for Continuing Education art classes.

SAMFA was proud to host the SAISD Administrators' end-of-school retreat.
They explored the museum and made their own art in the museum's studio.
Their
art work was inspired by the Symphony's Art to Music program. SAISD public
information officer Jamie Highsmith wrote of the event, "Thanks for
always welcoming us and rolling out the red carpet
as well as being
able to create our own 'attempts' at art in the studio space." SAISD

As SAMFA's education department moves into the second half of 2007, things
are looking up. Watch for the return of "Art Thursdays" on September
6 and our annual fall "Family Day" on October 20! Don't
forget to book your tour of the museum. It's an exciting time for education
at SAMFA. Come and join us for the exhilarating ride!
