All Over the Place: The Moving Image Theater

This program explores the work of individual filmmakers, resources that present, preserve or produce motion image media and classic and cutting edge film and motion image media from around the world. There will be dialogue with important and knowledgeable people from the world of motion image production.

San Angelo native and documentary filmmaker Hector Galán will give a presentation entitled, Retrospective: A Look at the Works of Hector Galán including selections from “Los Lonely Boys: Cottonfields and Crossroads” which will premier on PBS, September 17, 2008

Film, Frida, directed by Julie Taymor. Mexican with English subtitles. Starring Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina, Geoffrey Rush, Ashley Judd, Antonio Banderas. Winner of two Academy Awards this biography follows the life of Mexican artist and activist, Frida Kahlo, through her emotional and physical challenges and her marriage to painter, Diego Rivera.

Dr. Gloria Duarte, English professor at Angelo State University will give a presentation entitled, Gayle “Western” Cunningham: From Local Cowgirl to Hollywood Movie Star. Gayle was a San Angelo native and 2008 is the 100th anniversary of her birth. Following will be the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans movie, Bells of San Angelo, directed by William Witney. A great action and color 1947 western with Roy and Dale having to reluctantly team up to break up a silver smuggling gang on the Mexican border. Songs by Sons of the Pioneers.

Film, Princess Mononoke, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. This feature length Japanese animated film is a complex mythical tale that raises questions about mankind’s place in the natural world. It was the biggest box-office hit in Japanese history.

Director Andrew Garrison and producer Nancy Bless will introduce and discuss the moving documentary, THIRD WARD TX, about artists and neighbors who are breathing life into their historically black Houston neighborhood and collide with
real estate developers. This film is shown in collaboration with the Southwest Alternate Media Project, Houston.

Film, Like Water for Chocolate, directed by Alfonso Arau. Mexican with English subtitles. Starring Lumi Cavazos, Marco Leonardi, Regina Torne. Striking film set in the early 20th century about a young woman who finds solace in her cooking when her lover marries her sister.
