This traveling exhibit of 60 works was chosen from the 48th annual Society of Animal Artists exhibition. The Society of Animal Artists is an association of painters and sculptors working in the field of animal art whose subject matter includes the entire spectrum of the animal kingdom. Formed in the 1950s, today the Society includes 463 members residing in the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Europe, South America, Asia and Japan. The Society is dedicated to the portrayal of our living heritage and its preservation. For members of the Society of Animal Artists there are no limits -- feathers, shells, fur or fins are all equally of interest.

The Work of James Surls

js 1
James Surls (b.1943) is an American modernist sculptor. He is one of the most preeminent artists that the state of Texas has produced. He is best known for his large unpainted wooden sculptures that have images burnt into them. He often adds bent steel wires. Surls was given the Living Legend Award by the Dallas Visual Art Center in 1993 and in 1991 he was named Texas Artist of the Year by the Art League of Houston. As part of the West Texas Triangle joint venture, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts will feature two works by Surls: a hanging sculpture from his most recent work in wood and steel, as well as one of his ink and graphite drawings on paper.
