The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts operates one of
the most extensive art education programs for its' size of any museum in the
nation. It was primarily for this reason that we received the National Museum
Service Award, which has been given to only 32 other museums in America and
was presented at the White House by Laura Bush this past January 2003.
Although the museum does provide numerous programs for adults, we have placed
heavy emphasis on children's programs. This is because our community is relatively
remote and art and cultural opportunities for children are very limited.
We collaborate with more than a dozen organizations in our community and directly
and extensively with the San Angelo Independent School District, the offices
of Region IX and local school districts up to 100 miles away. With the SAISD
and other public schools, we are keenly aware of their need for all education
experiences to tie in directly with state mandates and testing standards.
The
museum also offers a vast and growing array of programs for specific audiences
which are carefully planned. A few of these include 1)an outreach program
that we take to the Boys & Girls Club of San Angelo, 2) a twice a week
half-day long program for mentally retarded adults done in cooperation with
MHMR, 3)"Art As A Third Language" for students who are learning
English through the Adult Literacy Council, 4) a Summer for Kids program which
offers up to 50 different classes throughout the summer for Pre-K through
elementary aged students, 5) regional outreach programs comprised of lectures
and artworks to communities such as Eden and Ozona offered primarily through
the local library, 6)In-Service training for SAISD teachers regarding the
use of museum and art resources in the classroom, 7) use of museum spaces
for education related groups such as P.T.A.'s and individual school campuses.
The museum is in a period of intensive planning and exploring even broader
education initiatives. We have a newsletter distributed through the SAISD
called "The Brush" to inform the teachers of the service that we
offer and current exhibits and other activities. We have recently purchased
some land and very dilapidated structures adjacent to the museum and have
already initiated a strategic planning process to develop that property in
ways that will allow us to extend our educational offerings even further.

We frequently host large scale free public events for the family that include
hands-on art activities for children. These include a twice annual Family
Day day long program and celebrations and activities around certain major
exhibition openings. Currently the museum is impacting over 85,000 people
annually through visitation, on-site and outreach programs and although difficult
to measure through a range of televised programming including a number of
programs produced in cooperation with Angelo State University for their education
access channel. The museum provides an amazing 4,000 hours of service annually
to the community.
