Degas and the Little Dancer

LAURENCE ANHOLT

If you walk into a certain room in a famous art museum, you will see a beautiful bronze sculpture of a little dancer.  She stands with one foot forward, her hands clasped behind her back and an expression on her face that seems tired and a little sad.  Degas and the Little Dancer is set in Paris many years ago.  The story belongs to Marie, but it’s also a story a bout a very famous artist a man named Edgar Degas.

Project: Clay Dancer

During this activity, your children will be able to create their own 3-d clay sculpture using self-hardening clay!  At home, when the clay is dry, they will be able to decorate and paint their sculpture with regular acrylic craft paints.  The children will learn about 3-D sculpture, clay techniques, designing and construction of clay.  The children will use their hands to create, design and sculpt the subject of their choice!
