Opulent banquets, Bacchanals, costume and masked balls have been held in every culture as far back as history can record. Such lavish celebrations often marked seasonal transitions or periods of religious observance. Among the most famous celebrations in the world is the annual Carnevale di Venezia in Venice, Italy which has a multitude of events and balls which mark the beginning of the Lenten period.

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts will host a Fete drawing its inspiration from this most majestic of celebrations. We will pay homage to the party held in Venice in the late summer of 1951 know as Le Bal Beistegui hosted by Don Carlos de Beistegui (“Charlie”). This came to be known as the most famous ball of the twentieth century. It was attended by luminaries such as the Aga Khan III, Gene Tierney, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, nobility from throughout Europe and many of the wealthiest people from around the world. It is believed that indeed world decisions were made that evening that had impacts for decades to come. The party inspired similar events to be observed in films such as “The Pink Panther” and “To Catch a Thief” with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.

Our party will take place in a beautiful private home which appropriately draws its inspiration from a classic Mediterranean villa. Italian inspired delicacies, cocktails, wonderful music to dance to and some extraordinary art that you can purchase will mark an evening that will not be soon forgotten. If so inspired arrive in full costume or merely a mask, or failing that, marvel at your friends and neighbors in disguise but never there- after reveal the secrets learned, plots concocted and grand plans made that will further advance our remarkable community.

There will be preview cocktail party to view the art that can be purchased approximately a week prior to the party (time and location to be announced)
